SQL Server Backup to URL
A new feature to SQL Server 2012 (requires SP1 CU2) is the backup to URL functionality. This feature allows you the option to backup your SQL Server database directly to the Windows Azure service. This adds value to an infrastructure by decreasing on-site hosted storage, increasing your options for Disaster Recovery as well as potentially saving on off-site storage arrangements such as Iron Mountain. For example, instead of backing up a database to local disk and then backing up the image to tape and then sending the tape off-site. You can now backup directly off-site into a geo-replicated environment that is managed for you.
I would recommend starting with no mission critical databases such as master data, or reference databases. This allows you to work out any issues with the backup and restore and update your recovery documentation. Then as your comfort level increases you can evaluate the benefit and risks to your other applications.
